Lot 203: 1967 Ferrari 330GTC Berlinetta

Exceptional Ferrari Motor Cars, Bonhams (17 December 2006)

The vendor purchased this left-hand drive 330GTC at auction in the UK in 2001. Sold new in the USA and previously resident in Germany, the car had already been repainted (circa ten years ago) and while in the vendor’s care has benefited from a full mechanical overhaul carried out by one of Europe’s foremost Ferrari engineers, Walo Schibler of Garage Symbol in Matran, Switzerland. The 330GTC engine is recognised as one of the strongest that Ferrari ever made, and the opportunity was taken to unlock some of its potential for tuning. In the vendor’s own words: ‘We decided on the engine upgrade to have some fun and surprise the 275GTBs, Daytonas, et al.’ Accordingly, the engine was entirely rebuilt incorporating high lift camshafts and modified cylinder heads among many other improvements, which raised peak revs from 7,000 to 8,000 and the estimated maximum brake horsepower to circa 340 (from the stock 300). The vendor reports that the power comes in strongly at around 3,700rpm and that this very fast car remains smooth and flexible in all traffic conditions.
To cope with this increased performance the suspension was lowered slightly and stiffened for track/rally use, while the brakes were set up with special pads, etc. Further enhancing the car’s suitability for competitive historic motor sport events, the original seats were modified to provide greater lateral support; competition seat belts fitted and a rally ‘tripmaster’ installed. In addition to the foregoing improvements, the mechanical restoration included cleaning the radiators; rebuilding the rear transaxle; fitting a new clutch and exhaust system; overhauling the air conditioning system and pumps; and renewing parts of the wiring harness. All of this work was carried out circa 2004, taking approximately six months, and the relevant invoices are contained within the substantial accompanying history file. Finished in argento with red leather interior, and equipped with the desirable Borrani wire wheels, ‘09459’ comes with full original tool kit, owner’s handbook, Contrôle Technique and Swiss Carte Grise.
