Lot 403: 1964 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Standard Steel Saloon
The final development of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud range came with the announcement of the Silver Cloud III in 1962. The new model employed the 6,230cc V8 engine which had been introduced for the Cloud II for the 1960 season. The power output from the larger V8 engine dramatically improved the Silver Cloud model and the Cloud III featured a raised compression engine and larger carburettors, giving still more power. Four-speed automatic transmission was standard. Adoption of the four-headlamp design was a distinctive feature, the radiator shell was lowered slightly and the passenger accommodation featured separate front seats and more room for the rear seat passengers. Rolls-Royce’s superior standards of engineering build quality and passenger comforts were not compromised in the new model.
SFU 499 left Rolls-Royce at Crewe on 1st May 1964 and it was delivered to Rolls-Royce dealers Jack Barclay Ltd. in Berkeley Square. It was equipped from the factory with automatic gearbox and power-assisted steering, as well as the desirable options of air-conditioning and electric windows. The car comes from French ownership and has been regularly serviced by a Rolls-Royce agent in France. Recent work completed has included the fitting of new tyres and a brake overhaul and fitting of a new exhaust system. In 2001 a major coachwork refurbishment included a bare metal respray in two-tone black over grey metallic livery and a photographic record of that work is available. At the same time, the chassis was protectively repainted. The black Connolly hide upholstery is the original with a superb patina, the burr walnut veneers are excellent and the interior is furnished with immaculate charcoal grey carpets. Just 32,000 or so miles are displayed on the odometer although this is unconfirmed.
SFU 499 is offered with a good history file which includes various invoices for work carried out in recent years and also copies of the original Factory Build Specification Cards. It is currently registered in France and as such is in free circulation within the E.U.
