Lot 688: 1964 FORD ZEPHYR Mk III/4 FOUR DOOR SALOON
Vehicle No. Z45DO71660A
Dark grey with red interior.
Engine: four cylinders in line, overhead valves, 1703cc, 68bhp at 4800rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual with synchromesh on all gears; Suspension: front, independent coils, rear, semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: power-assisted, discs to the front, drums to the rear. Right hand drive.
The Zephyr was a mainstay of Ford's range for over twenty years, evolving through four revisions to keep up with and cater for the market's demands. This is the third and penultimate version, unusual in that it was the first Zephyr to be offered with only four cylinders. Although smaller than its predecessors, the four cylinder engine produced as much power as had the Mk I and still allowed the Mk III to record marginally better acceleration, top speed, and fuel economy figures. The addition of power-assisted brakes (with discs on the front) as standard and the very latest all-synchromesh four speed gearbox ensured its popularity, and nearly 107,000 of these cars rolled off the production line between 1962 and 1966.
This example rolled out of Dagenham in March 1964. Its battleship grey paintwork has benefited from the car's inclusion in the museum where it has been kept in very presentable condition. Inside, the original red two-texture upholstery is still in excellent condition but would benefit from cleaning. The results of long-term storage aside, the unworn condition of the interior gives no reason to doubt the veracity of the 16,339 miles displayed on the odometer. With light recommissioning, this could be one of the best examples of the Mk III/4 in the country. This car is sold without documentation.
