Lot 215: 1960 Sunbeam Rapier Mk III Three Position Convertible

Sports, Touring, Historic Road and Racing Cars, Coys (30 April 2006)

During the early 1960's the works Sunbeam Rapiers were very successful on the International Rallying circuit. The Rapier, as a road car, was a sporting 2-door version of the standard Hillman Minx with a 1357 c. c. 4-cylinder engine with overdrive. The potential of the Rapier, both as a road car and a competition car however was soon discovered by the Rootes Group and when the Series II car was announced it had shed all similarity to the Minx. The engine was now 1494 c.c., producing more power than before and still making the most of the overdrive unit. The Rapier was such a good road and rally car that a further two series were produced; the series III and IIIA. Not only was-the Rapier a superb rally car, but it was also a highly successful racing car in the saloon car championships driven most notably by Peter Harper and Paddy Hopkirk. This low mileage car which is believed to have covered a genuine 47,500 miles from new, is finished in smoke grey with a light blue trim with walnut veneer dashboard and finished with a royal blue hood. The blue three position hood is in excellent condition and in full working order. The car was exported to South Africa in the early 1960's where it stayed for approximately 20 years before returning to the UK in the early 1980's. Because of the dry climate, it has been unusually well preserved. The car is described by the vendor to be in good condition, having also benefited from a sympathetic restoration in the late 1980's, including a re-spray in the original colour scheme. All body panels and floor pan are original and the underbody/chassis have been completely cleaned and painted and regularly sprayed with oil . Mechanically the car is excellent condition with the 1494 cc engine breathing through twin Zenith carbs rebuilt approximately 1000 miles ago. The car is supplied with the original tool roll, a V5 document, old MoT's since 1980 and a current MoT valid until April 2007. An elegant and rare open tourer.
