Lot 244: 1975 Alfa Romeo Montreal

Sports, Touring, Historic Road and Racing Cars, Coys (30 April 2006)

Alfa Romeo's stylish Montreal was first shown at the World Expo in Montreal in 1967. Originally intended as nothing more than a show car based on the existing Giulia GTV floor pan with a 1,779 cc twin cam four cylinder engine, the reaction was so positive that at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show, a production version was displayed. Installed in the engine bay was a version of Alfa's V8 quad cam racing engine with dry sump lubrication taken from their Tipo 33 racing car, this was mated to a 5 speed ZF gearbox. This was an altogether much more appropriate power plant for such an exotic looking machine. With 200 bhp, performance was brisk; near 140 mph maximum speed and 0-60 mph reached in 7.6 seconds. The svelte Bertone coachwork incorporated many novel stylistic features, such as the headlamp 'eyelids', the NACA duct on the bonnet and the grilles which lined the rear quarters intimating a mid-engined layout. The Giulia floor pan had been retained with independent coil-sprung front suspension, live coil-sprung rear axle, limited slip differential and ventilated brake discs. This all added up to handling and roadholding in keeping with the car's high performance. Unfortunately, timing was not good; the energy crisis of the mid 70's effectively ensuring the car's premature demise. However production continued in limited numbers until 1977, by which time just 3,925 examples had been built. Today, this one-time Alfa Romeo flagship is often overlooked, and certainly underrated, providing as it does, high performance with refinement and practicality. This fine left hand drive example finished in period orange with a black interior is described as being in very good general order by the vendor, unfortunately the full details of the car were unavailable at the time of going to press, however interested parties should contact a member of the Coys staff.
