Lot 314: 1961 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II Saloon

Rolls-Royce, Bentley & Selected Pre-War Motor Cars, Bonhams (16 June 2007)

This quite exceptional, low mileage Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II was ordered new by Mr Rowland Smith, proprietor of Rowland Smith Motors in Hampstead, North London and first registered ‘RSM 1’ on 1st January 1961. In the first few years of its life the car was used to drive to London from Devon about twice annually, luggage being brought up separately in Mrs Smith’s MkVII Jaguar which was used daily, the Rolls-Royce being kept garaged. After Rowland Smith Motors closed down, the Rolls was only driven to London once a year. Apart from those London trips the car was used very occasionally to go to the Palace Hotel in Torquay, which was owned by Mr Smith and located approximately 12 miles from his estate at Coleton Fishacre. When Rowland Smith died at the end of 1979 his widow became owner of the car, and when she died in January 1982 it passed to the present owner and was put into secure storage. It has not been used since then but has been kept taxed, insured and MoT’d every year. The car was serviced regularly by Dutton Forshaw in Torquay until they closed down and subsequently by an ex-Dutton Forshaw Rolls-Royce specialist operating independently. It remains in absolutely wonderful original condition having covered a mere circa 14,250 miles since new. The car is well documented and the present owner is keen to supply an account of its history to the successful purchaser. It comes complete with all original tools (untouched), possesses a current MoT certificate and has recently been serviced. Rolls-Royce have commented in the past that they have been made aware of another example that has covered circa 20,000 miles but are not aware of one having covered as few as chassis ‘SXC403’ - perhaps making this Silver Cloud II the lowest mileage and possibly most original example available worldwide. The car is a credit to its current owner and the exceptionally low mileage is evident both in the overall look and feel of the car.
