Lot 317: 1963 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Saloon

Rolls-Royce, Bentley & Selected Pre-War Motor Cars, Bonhams (16 June 2007)

‘The Silver Cloud III is a car which sets out to do a job, and does it to near perfection. Conservative in approach to a degree which some critics call old-fashioned, it is nevertheless a vehicle which impresses uniquely by its refinement and quality of construction. Furthermore - and this is what most interested us - it is a machine that responds as much to the sporting driver as to the kid-gloved chauffeur.’ - Sporting Motorist magazine, 1964. Launched in 1962, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III and its Bentley S3 equivalent employed the 6.2-litre aluminium-alloy V8 engine introduced on the Silver Cloud II/Bentley S2 - though with larger carburettors, a new distributor and raised compression ratio - and came with a four-speed GM-derived automatic transmission as standard equipment. Most obvious among many changes from the preceding models were the adoption of a four-headlamp lighting arrangement, the absence of sidelights from the wing tops, and a slightly lower radiator shell. Inside there was revised accommodation with separate front seats and increased room for rear passengers. The last mainstream Rolls-Royce to employ a separate chassis, the Silver Cloud III remained in production until superseded by the unitary-construction Silver Shadow in late 1965. This Silver Cloud III has enjoyed only two owners, the current for the past 29 years, and was restored in 1992. Affording the considerable convenience of power-assisted steering, the car is finished in Burgundy with cream leather upholstery, Cumberland Stone carpets, fawn headlining and whitewall tyres, the latter a popular choice in the 1960s. ‘AAX 759A’ comes exceptionally well equipped, being offered complete with tool kit, torch, pump, spare wheel and lambswool over-rugs. Included with it is some service history, original handbook and sales brochure, factory build card, expired MoTs for the period 1980-2007, Swansea V5C registration document and MoT to 27th March 2008.
