Lot 631: 1911 Panhard Levassor 15hp Landaulette

Collectors' Motor Cars and Motorcycles, Bonhams (3 December 2007)

Panhard-Levassor production commenced in 1891 and although both Benz and Daimler had built their automobiles earlier, they were isolated one-offs and not part of any sustained model programme, making the Parisian firm the world’s first make of motor cars in continuous production. By 1910, their annual production had risen to a record 2024 vehicles.
This 15hp Panhard-Levassor Taxicab with seating for up to seven was issued with current registration 19 June 1911 for first owner Mrs Ann Olds in Deal, Kent, almost certainly for weddings and special functions. As such, the Ducros-bodied Landaulette with opening roof for rear occupants is believed to be the oldest Hackney Carriage presently licensed for the road and, having spent the last fifty years sheltered from wear and tear in a major private museum collection, is reckoned to be the most original too. Indeed, most of the period features would appear to have been well preserved, while any refurbishment during the last couple of years, such as to the paintwork in blue with gold coach-lining and the replacement of some of the black leather, has certainly been sensitively carried out. Magneto, cooling system, water pump, lubrication system and brakes have reportedly received attention in recent months, while the vendor also tells us both 4-cylinder 15p motor of 2412cc capacity and 3-speed transmission are in excellent order.
Although not currently in receipt of a VCC Dating Certificate, the year of first registration has been authenticated by an original/top copy notification from the Kent County Council archives. Last registered in 1959, D 6516 has a current V5, while the latest MOT will be current until September of next year. Also included is a most appropriate period sales brochure for this vehicle, a booklet for Panhard-Levassor cars bodied by W&G Ducros Ltd of London, stamped by Victor K Robb and Co, Automobile Engineer, Belfast. We are also advised by the vendor that a period-correct luggage rack will be fitted to the roof before the sale.
