Lot 686: 1975 Alfa Romeo 2000 Berlina Automatic

Collectors' Motor Cars and Motorcycles, Bonhams (3 December 2007)

Successor to the Giulia Super, the 1750 Berlina was launched in 1967. The newcomer’s boxy yet aerodynamically-efficient body – styled by Bertone - bore a distinct family resemblance to that of its predecessor and, like all Alfa saloons, the 1750 possessed a distinctly sporting nature, its 1,779cc, 118bhp version of Alfa’s classic twin-cam ‘four’ making it a genuine 110mph car. Constructed on a longer wheelbase than the Giulia Super, the 1750 was both roomier and more luxurious inside, while its larger engine more than offset the slight increase in weight. Performance was further enhanced in 1972 by the arrival of the larger-engined 2000 model. Subtly restyled, the latter retained its predecessor’s all disc-braked chassis and five-speed manual gearbox but came with 132bhp on tap, which was good enough for a top speed of 118mph.
The rare right-hand drive 2000 Berlina offered here is one of only 250 made with the three-speed automatic transmission. A two-owner example, the car was restored by its first owner, who kept it for 29 years, and has covered circa 93,000 miles from new. ‘KFK 86P’ is a many-time concours winner, having garnered six national class wins, four class wins at the West Midlands Classic Car Show, and a 2nd overall at the Auto Italia display and the NEC, Birmingham. Finished in Champagne beige with blue velour interior, the latter featuring its original radio, the car is presented in excellent condition throughout – even the underside looks new! It comes complete with all its original books, manuals, tools, service booklet, sales brochure and a quantity of spare parts. Representing a wonderful opportunity for the dedicated Alfa Romeo enthusiast/collector, this lovely 2000 Berlina is offered with Swansea V5, MoT to May 2008 and a substantial file of history including the original tax disc (expired July 1976) and sundry magazine articles featuring the car.
