Lot 693: 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 2-Door Hardtop

Collectors' Motor Cars and Motorcycles, Bonhams (3 December 2007)

The 1970-launched Challenger Road and Track with choice of engine up to 426 Hemi was the Dodge Division of the Chrysler Corporations answer to the Ford Mustang and the Generals Camaro. The Mopar VIN number would indicate that this particular R/T was built at the Hamtramck plant, Michigan, in 1970, with numbers, though unconfirmed, thought likely by the vendor still to be matching.
One of eight different Challenger models available in 1970, the 2-Door Hardtop with Scat Pack performance package packs a Magnum V8 to N Code High Performance specification - therefore being a 383ci 4-valve motor of 6.3-litre capacity developing 335bhp at 5200rpm and 425lb/ft of torque at 3400rpm when new - and has Chrysler Torqueflite 727 auto-shift, last overhauled 2004. Still in its original factory hue of Sub Lime, which cost an extra $14 thirty-seven years ago, the rear scuttle and sides of the car were in receipt of some repainting in September.
The Rallye Instrument Cluster fitted included tacho, 150mph speedo, trip odometer, oil gauge, clock, variable speed wipers and electric washers, and the Rally Suspension Pack consisted of heavy-duty torsion bars, much stiffer rear springs with 6-leaves and comp-spec shocks, and sway bar. Factory Fitted Options from new included power-assisted disc brakes, rear bumper guards, slapstick shifter, hood tie-down pins, remote-control mirror on the left, power-assist steering, tinted windshield and windows, centre console and black bucket seats.
Paperwork with the car includes the original Chrysler Corporation Car Production Broadcast Certificate, confirming manufacturing details, and useful Broadcast Sheet Decoder, Maryland Certificate of Title for Elliott Enoch Gusty of Columbia from 12th of May 1986, Baltimore to Liverpool shipping invoice dated 14th of June 1988 and Customs Clearance note. On file, too, are nine old MOTs, the earliest certificate being issued on the 13th of July 1988, the most recent when catalogued expiring in July. It is hoped, however, that the car will be in receipt of a fresh MOT by sale day and potential bidders are therefore advised to inspect the latest paperwork during viewing.
