Lot 119: Daimler Sovereign 4.2 Saloon

Jaguar Heritage + Classic & Collectors Motor Cars, Barons (29 April 2008)

The 1968 XJ6 was, in its way, as much of a milestone in the development of the saloon as the E-type had been to the development of the sports car in 1961. It is testament to the advanced design of the XJ6 that it is still a pleasure to drive, some 40 years later. This particular Daimler derivative, is a Series One Sovereign. Built in July 1973 it is one of the last Series One cars to come out of the factory prior to the launch of the Series Two. Finished in a, special order, combination of Silver paint under a green vinyl roof, the car has sage green leather interior and has been the subject of a comprehensive body and mechanical rebuild over a six year period. It is said that any panel found to contain rust was removed and replaced with original Jaguar parts. A photographic record, of the rebuild, was kept and is included in the history file. The list is comprehensive and includes inner and outer sills, boot floor, rear valance, complete rear wings, and inner wheel arches, floors and jacking points, both front wings, and front valances etc. The engine was fully rebuilt by Marque experts VSE , with rebuilt carburettors and AED , as were the starter motor, distributor, alternator and Borg Warner automatic gearbox. This was stripped, checked and cleaned before being rebuilt using new gaskets and seals. The car is equipped with a new stainless steel exhaust, the wheels were shot blasted, re-enamelled and fitted with Pirelli P400's. To enhance the final appearance of the vehicle, the sill tread plates have been replaced with brand new chrome items. Series one XJ Saloons are rarely offered in such outstanding condition and represent excellent value when they do. Though fully restored, this example comes with the optional driving and fog lights and also retains the original fitment Motorola radio. Offered complete with a file of receipts, old MOT certificates and the aforementioned photo record of the rebuild.
