Lot 209: Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III

Classic Americana + Classic & Collectors Motor Car, Barons (22 July 2008)

The Silver Cloud was first seen in 1955 as a factory built Standard Steel Saloon with a 4887cc, straight six engine. One could order coachbuilt version by H. J. Mulliner, Park Ward, James Young and Hooper By the Standard Steel Saloon version was most popular with customers. When "The Autocar" tested the new Could I in 1955, they described the experience as being more akin to a magic carpet ride, soaking up endless miles effortlessly. This description was based on a standard steel saloon.. In 1959 the first V8 Rolls-Royce was seen when the Cloud II was launched. The new model used a 6.2 litre, V8 allied to a three-speed automatic transmission. Other changes included power steering as standard and no manual option. By 1964 the S2 was superseded by the last of the Silver Clouds, the S3, which sported quad headlights and many detailed improvements. The Cloud III is, by far, the most desirable of the range, benefiting, as it does, from a well sorted drive train and latest technology. Offered here is a 1964 Cloud III, which was the subject of an extended restoration spanning many years. It would appear that the car was off the road when the DVLA revised registration documents in 1976, as it is now declared as being registered in 2001, which is when the vendor acquired the car in an unfinished state. Since that time the car has been equipped with a completely new interior in St James Red hide, the wood veneers have all been restored and the general impression of the interior is quite stunning. Originally ordered by Mr. R. E. Beeson of Moor Park, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, the car was supplied through Jack Barclay via a St. Albans agent. The original order specified additional lights high up in the "B" Posts acting as both parking lights and blinkers (turn indicators), electric windows, tubeless Avon tyres and two tone paintwork. The car is now finished in Royal blue with the contrasting red hide, the car is in excellent condition but has been unused for some time. Part of a private collection, the car is being offered for sale due to the relocation of the owners. A fine example of a Cloud III, which is offered complete with copies of the original build sheets and specification. The car will require some recommissioning.
