Lot 323: Lamborghini Jalpa

The Spirit Of Motoring, Coys (4 October 2008)

Produced between 1982 and 1989, the Lamborghini Jalpa was the junior Lamborghini of the 1980s, essentially an updated Silhouette introduced after a four year hiatus to rejoin the battle with Ferrari's similarly sized 308 series. Major changes involved a quad'-camshaft V8 engine with capacity increased to 3.5 litres and somewhat more aggressive styling, mainly in the side treatment of the body which was again conceived and executed by Bertone. The name Jalpa came from a famous breed of fighting bulls, Ferruccio Lamborghini having a liking for the beasts, and being a Taurus he ended to give most Lamborghini cars bullfighting-related names. The Jalpa was still a Targa-style two seater with a carburettor-fed engine mounted transversely amidships, plus a five speed rear transaxle and fully independent suspension, all as per the Urraco/Silhouette, but it was little quicker owing to slightly less horsepower, due to emission regulations, and a little more weight thanks to added amenities conducive to comfortable touring. Production was both limited and sporadic, reflecting Lamborghini's continuing financial woes, which looked to be solved with the 1987 takeover by Chrysler Corporation. Also, Jalpa output tended to be sacrificed to that of its brutish, futuristic big brother, the Countach, which earned a bigger per-unit profit. The final example was produced in 1990. First registered on 16th August 1985, chassis ZA9Z00000FLA12199 was acquired for a private collection on 4th July 1987. Shortly thereafter, the car was subject to an extensive service, with many minor parts being repaired or replaced. Since then, this Jalpa has been kept in dry storage with full time staff employed to maintain it and the other cars in the prestigious collection; the car is therefore in very good condition throughout. Finished in red with a black leather interior, this car represents the pinnacle of 1980s Lamborghini supercar technology. Not to be missed by any enthusiast of the marque!
