Lot 124: Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III

Classic & Sports Cars, Barons (28 April 2009)

The Silver Cloud III would be the final incarnation of the model and would also be the last Rolls-Royce to be built on a separate chassis. Design changes included dual headlamps and a lower front wing/bonnet line when the standard version was unveiled towards the end of 1962. For the first time those rakish drop head coups and fixed head coups hitherto exclusive to the Bentley Continental were also available on Silver Cloud III chassis. Prospective purchasers didn't share this opinion of many critics, who claimed the car was "Old Fashioned" and in fact to meet demand a special series of chassis was produced well into the year 1966 - despite the successor Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow having been launched in 1965.

To many, the Cloud III was the last, true Rolls-Royce and despite its association with pop idols of the 1960's the model retains a healthy following and still commands good prices.

The example offered here is said to have been stored for many years and is described as being in good, usable condition. It is offered complete with the original build sheets and is said to drive very well. The motor car will, in fact, be driven over 60 miles to the sale.

Finished in sand over sable with magnolia hide and fawn carpets, the car is equipped with the 6.2 litre, V8 engine and 3-speed automatic transmission. It has both MoT and tax through to July 2009.
