Lot 260: Alfa Romeo 1900 Sprint Coupe by Touring

Legende et Passion, Coys (18 May 2009)

With its unitary construction - the first on an Alfa Romeo - the 1900 saloon of 1950 was to be the Italian concern's first mass-produced car, assembled on a purpose-built line at the Portello works. Powered by a 1,844cc twin overhead camshaft engine with four cylinders, Alfas historically having six or eight cylinders, it produced 86bhp with single Solex carburettor or 93bhp with higher compression ratio and twin webers. Also all new was the supsension: wishbones/coil springs and telescopic dampers at the front and solid, coil sprung rear axle - initially with alloy radius arms and Panhard rod, but soon replaced by steel radius arms and upper triangle link - with singular dampers. The result was excellent road holding while performance, via the column change four speed gearbox, was excellent; 90mph for the 80bhp model and 105mph for the 98bhp version. 1952 saw the introduction of the Sprint models, and as was the custom before the war, these were mainly delivered to the crème de la crème of the Italian coachbuilders, to be fitted with more elegant Coupe or Convertible bodies, most of which were designed and built by Touring, following their famous Superleggera principle with a lightweight aluminium body over a tubular steel construction. Power was increased to a respectable 100 bhp, propelling the rear wheels via a 4 speed column-operated gearbox. Chassis No. 1173 is one of the rare surviving Coupes of the first series and, having been delivered to an English gentleman, still retains its original old-style UK log book. Having recently been subjected to a high quality restoration by an Italian specialist, it is being described by the vendor as in good to excellent condition throughout and still features its original engine. Most attractively finished in dark green with a two-tone brown interior, this right hand drive Berlinetta will surely be a welcome entrant to numerous classic events and represents one of the most sought-after post-war products from this mythical marque.
