Lot 016: Gilbern GT
Famously known as the only car to be produced in Wales, the Gilbern was made in Llantwit Fardre, Pontyridd, Glamorgan, between 1959 and 1973. Three models were offered over this period the GT, the Genie and the Invader, all of which featured glassfibre bodywork.
The GT, a 2+2 two door coup was the company's first car and was made between 1959 and 1967. The GT MkI was initially available with either a Coventry Climax 1098cc engine or a 948cc Austin-Healey Sprite unit with an optional Shorrocks supercharger. The chassis was fabricated from square steel tubing and the front suspension was initially from the Austin A35. The body was a one piece moulding. Although usually supplied in kit form, the body was provided fully trimmed and painted leaving the purchaser to only complete the mechanical items. Later versions came with a B-Series 1500 or 1600cc MGA or 1800cc MGB engine and coil sprung BMC rear axle. With the coming of the larger engine, the car was renamed the 1800GT.
First registered in January 1966, this particular 1800GT has been in the current ownership for the last 21 years and has an MGB engine and overdrive gearbox fitted . Said to have covered just 61,000 miles from new it is reported to be in basically sound condition all round but has been laid up for the last four years and will need some recommissioning before use. If he gets time before the auction, the vendor has said he will get the car up and running himself. Please check with us on the day to see whether or not he has made any progress.
