Lot 018: TVR 390SE
Launched in 1984, the TVR 390SE featured many novelties not found in other wedge-shaped TVRs of the era. TVR Engineering worked with Andy Rouse, a Rover tuning specialist, to produce a blueprinted engine turning out an extra 85bhp, taking it to 275bhp. The engine achieved these numbers by using some very interesting improvements such as increasing the bore to 3,905cc, fitting high-lift camshafts, gas-flowed cylinder heads with large valves and Cosworth pistons. The result was a 0-60 time of 5.6 seconds and a top speed of 144mph
A stronger clutch, limited slip diff and wider Yokohama tyres were fitted to help get the extra power down onto the road. The styling of the car was also improved with a deeper front air dam, a rear under-body aerofoil and fifteen-inch wheels. A Series 2 car appeared in 1985 with the most obvious difference being the rounder nose. A rare sight these days, it is believed that no more than 33 examples were built.
Dating from 1988, this particular car has had a total of �6,000 spent with TVR specialists in the last 4 years. Work carried out includes a full chassis strip and restoration with photographs to prove. A complete new stainless steel exhaust system was also fitted at a cost of �500. Other work includes a reconditioned steering rack and a rear end rebuild with new discs, pads, handbrake cables, fuel lines and pump and reconditioned callipers. New 'Steve Heath' drop links have been fitted along with Magnecor leads, Lucas dizzy cap and rotor arm.
The last service was carried out at 40,717 miles (less than 300 miles ago), which included a replacement radiator, replacement gearbox rear main seal, and replacement oil cooler pipes at a total cost �1,072. Supplied with a comprehensive history file, it has an MOT until February 2010.
