Lot 128: Porsche 928 GT
By 1989 the Porsche 928 had gone soft. Yes, the latest S4 model had a 320bhp engine and could hit 160mph, but it had wallowy suspension and a slushy automatic gearbox that held no appeal for the sporting driver. But then the 928 GT came out, a sharp and focussed driver's car with 330bhp, 171mph top speed and, crucially, a five-speed manual gearbox and sports suspension.
To quote Porsche racer and journalist Tony Dron: "They changed the 928 completely, turning it into an uncompromising sports GT quite unlike the wallowing luxury barge it had become... The 928 GT was set up to satisfy those who liked to drive hard, yet still not scare the pants off them... At long last the 928 had been made into a true driver's car with bags of character. A strong, growling beast, there really was something rather grand and magnificent about it."
First registered in 1993, this 928 GT is believed to be the fourth last car imported to the UK. It has covered less than 52,500 miles from new with a huge service history to show careful and regular maintenance. It was last serviced just 2,000 miles ago and the cambelt was changed less than 7,000 miles ago. The car has also recently been fitted with uprated brake discs and braided stainless steel hoses. With an MOT until February 2010 and taxed until November, it comes with all its original handbooks, two sets of keys and has a Thatcham-approved alarm immobiliser fitted. A nice private plate is also included. A sure-fire classic of the future that looks remarkable value at the guide price suggested today.
