Lot 309: 245 2 Litre Speedster

Grand Prix, Competition, Touring & Rally Cars, Coys (16 January 2010)

The Porsche 356 Speedster is one of the most desirable of all classic open two seaters. It is no surprise then that many companies have sprung up to cater to a market that perhaps cannot extend to the real thing. Amongst those at the top of their game is Chesil and it is one of their extremely well put together examples that is presented here today. This elegant example is supplied with a Porsche 914, 2 litre engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. It is one of the Rare Streetbeetles, the prototype of Chesil. With just 8,500 miles recorded and presented in period Porsche red with correct speedster leather seats, it was extensively refurbished by the Chesil factory in 2002 and represents an accurate replica of a 1957 Carrera GT with many original parts fitted. Fitted with an Arnie Levics-built Porsche 914 engine, the rebuild alone cost some 6,900 and the car now benefits from large valve heads, race cams, race conrods, forged racing pistons, uprated fuel pump and clutch and twin Webber 48 cards. Also included, to keep everything under control, are twin oil coolers and a sports exhaust. The car is extremely well known in the speedster club with its previous owner, Hero, being the second only member. With original bumper trims, bodywork trim, boot louvres, a plated engine bay, correct mirrors, lights and badges, the attention to detail is rightly described by the vendor as 'amazing'. The car also has a number of modern touches such as a multi CD system, service history, MoT test and road tax. Very stylish and very accessible.
