Lot 316: Surtees TS15 Formula Two
John Surtees formed his team in 1966 for the newly-formed CanAm series and had great success in winning the championship as an owner/driver in its first year. However, during the 1970s Surtees designed, built and raced, with typical dedication and determination, his own Team Surtees Formula One, Formula Two and Formula 5000 cars. Building on his reputation in Formula one team management and design, Surtees was able to attract clients and drivers alike in not just Formula One, but in Formula Two and Formula 5000. Teams such as the FINA Team with Derek Bell, Jochen Mass, Andrea de Adamich, Torsten Palm, the Matchbox Team with Carlos Pace and Mike Hailwood and the Hesketh Team with James Hunt all ran TS15s and proved competitive. Chassis number 006 is believed to have been campaigned by Peter Wardle in 1973 and 1974 in the British Formula Two series and was subsequently sold to Steve Carvill in 1975. In more recent years the car has been reliving its former glory. Purchased by the vendor fours years ago, 006 took part in the Derek Bell Trophy in 2006 and, powered by a Cosworth BDG engine with Hewland FG-400 gearbox, came second in class B. This TS15 does have a list of spares, including a second Tub, chassis number 007, which would enable any buyer to build a second car. Described by the vendor as in excellent condition and ready to race, the vehicle is accredited with full FIA papers and would enable any purchaser to enter the thrilling world of historic single seater racing.
