Lot 346: Volkswagen Beetle
The Volkswagen Beetle is truly a motoring icon. Launched in 1938 as the 'People's Car' it was to bring mobility to those of fairly modest means. During its forty year production life the basic concept remained unaltered (although it was still manufactured in Mexico and Brazil into the 1990s) and it underwent over 70,000 identifiable modifications. It was this constant development and attention to detail which made the car a practicable proposition into its dotage.
Over the years many Beetles have been modified with many popular styles, from a 'Cal Looker' to a 'Rat Rod'. The most typical way to customise the exterior is to change the wheels and lower the suspension of the car. The customisation scene started on the west coast of the USA in the 1960s and there still remains a very strong following for these cars today. The Beetle is perhaps one of the most modified and customised cars of all time and as with the example offered here hails from the centre of Beetle customisation; California. Originally registered on the 1st January 1963 on the west coast, this 'Street Car' was imported to the UK in 2008. All taxes have been paid and the car is supplied with a valid UK V5 registration document and MoT certificate. Described as being in excellent order, this left hand drive example is finished in purple with a grey interior sitting on lowered suspension with chrome wheels. Lift the engine cover and you will discover a number of nice finishing touches, including the chromed engine which looks fantastic.
This is a great opportunity to purchase a genuine Californian 'Street Car' that is fine order, ready to be displayed at various VW club meetings this summer.
