Lot 50: Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT
The pretty 105/115 Series two-door Coupes made in various specifications by Alfa Romeo from 1963 to 1977 were penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro as one of his first projects for Bertone. They succeeded the much vaunted Guilietta Sprint Coupe and were built on a shortened version of the Giulia Berlina floorpan. Power came from Alfa's ubiquitous four-cylinder all alloy twin-cam engine which, over the years, was available in a range of capacities from 1290cc to 1962cc. The engine was mated to a slick five-speed gearbox. Suspension was by wishbones and coil springs at the front and coil-sprung live axle at the rear. Braking was by Dunlop discs all-round and steering by recirculating ball. The first model to be introduced was the Giulia Sprint GT. It was equipped with a 1570cc version of Alfa's sonorous twin-cam unit and proved to be one of the best sellers of the range. A combination of relatively light weight, strong performance and readily exploitable handling made them popular both with enthusiast road drivers and the competition fraternity, and many examples are still campaigned in racing and historic rallying to this day. The left-hand drive 1964 example offered is finished in blue with black trim. It was reportedly restored and upgraded in 1993/1994 by Bob Dove and issued with a RAC MSA Historic Rally Vehicle Identity Form during February 1995. It has taken part in many such events including: the Classic Marathon, World Cup Rally, Three Castles Rally and the Rallye des Alps. The vendor describes the bodywork as "good" but with "a small amount of rust", the paintwork to be "marked on the right-hand door", the transmission to be "good" and the engine to be "outstanding" and "never to have given problems". Apparently 'ABD 666B' is MOT'd into January next year. With historic racing and rallying still the fastest growing areas of UK motorsport, there continues to be a thirst for suitable, competition prepared pre-'65 cars. This Alfa therefore provides an opportunity for someone to potentially join in the fun for relatively little outlay.
