Lot 412: Bentley S3 Continental Coup

Rolls-Royce, Bentley Motor Cars and Automobilia, Bonhams (19 June 2010)

Bentley S3 Continental, chassis number 'BC142XA', is one of a mere 75 of its type bodied by H J Mulliner, Park Ward Ltd at the latter's Willesden works after the two firms' merger, which Rolls-Royce had completed by the start of 1962. The car was delivered new via Weybridge Autos to its first owner, Mr Harry Cressman, of Hampton-in Arden, Warwickshire and registered 'HC 11'. Copy chassis cards on file note that it was equipped with electric windows, radio and Hirschmann electric aerial, and originally finished in Regal Red with beige leather interior. 'BC142XA' was exported to the USA circa 1981 and used sparingly there before being placed on museum display for several years. An accompanying appraisal, carried out by Europa Macchina, of Lewsiberry, Pennsylvania and dated 26th October 2006, notes that the chassis showed evidence of good maintenance and the original engine signs of regular service. The car was judged to be in above average mechanical condition for this age and mileage (a believed-genuine 54,733 miles at that time) although the refinished paintwork was said to be showing its age. No evidence of rust was found in the body panels. Purchased by the current vendor in 2009, the Bentley benefits from recent mechanical refurbishment, which included overhauling the brakes, cleaning the fuel lines and fitting new fuel pumps. Although not driven on the road since acquisition, the car is said to start and run readily but having spent almost 30 years inactive will require further re-commissioning before regular use. Sold strictly as viewed, BC142XA' is offered with Swansea V5 registration document and an expired MoT issued in March 1980. The latter document notes the registration as '32 JWN' and the recorded mileage at that time as 48,503 miles (the odometer currently displays a total of less than 55,000).
