Lot 420: Rolls-Royce R-Type 4-Litre Saloon

Rolls-Royce, Bentley Motor Cars and Automobilia, Bonhams (19 June 2010)

This right-hand drive Bentley R-Type 4-litre saloon with 'standard steel' coachwork and automatic transmission was formerly owned by Alan Whicker, one of British television's most eminent broadcasters, who first came to prominence on the BBC's Tonight programme and went on to present the long-running Whicker's World. The car was first owned by F Burrows Esq, of Horbury, Yorkshire before being purchased on 16th June 1961 by Alan Whicker, its second owner, who kept it until February 1964 when he traded it in at Alan Day Ltd, of London NW3. 'LUG 2' was then purchased (on 11th December 1964) by Mr Hubert Malcolm Price who was a partner in a prominent gentlemen's outfitters, Price & Beale of Nottingham, and also a local magistrate. The vehicle was acquired by the immediately preceding owner, Mr Duncan Ellison, from the late Mr Price's estate in 2001 and saw little use until purchased by the current vendor at Bonhams' Olympia Sale in December 2007 (Lot 614). Since acquisition the Bentley has covered 3,200 trouble-free miles, requiring no work other than light servicing and maintenance. Included in the sale is the registration mark 'LUG 2' and two letters from Alan Whicker in which he reminisces about owning the car. Sadly, the car's early history has been misplaced but it has been confirmed by Ristes Motor Company that they maintained it throughout Mr Price's ownership. Dated 27th November 2007, Ristes' letter on file states that Mr Price used the Bentley periodically for work and regularly for pleasure, and that it was well cherished. Ristes were responsible for all the annual servicing and maintenance, which included during the 25-year period of his ownership a total rebuild of the engine. The latter work was undertaken approximately 20 years ago at 91,702 miles, at which time the original automatic gearbox was replaced with a new one. (The odometer currently reads 114,500 miles and is believed correct). Hardened valve seats were fitted during the engine rebuild. 'LUG 2' remains in generally very good original condition and comes complete with owner's handbook and its original tool kits (in boot and beneath the driver's seat) plus oil syringes and hand lamp under the bonnet. Finished in Shell Grey with blue leather interior, the latter retaining its original radio in working order, the car is reported to start first time, maintaining regulation oil pressure, and with its automatic transmission changing smoothly. It is offered with old-style buff logbook (recording Alan Whicker's ownership); copies of factory build sheets and Ristes' invoices; various expired MoT certificates; current road fund licence; Swansea V5 registration document; and MoT to August 2010.
