Lot 248: MG A Fixedhead Coupe FIA Historic Race Car

Grand Prix, Competition, Touring & Rally Cars, Coys (15 January 2011)

When the MGA arrived in 1955, it must have come as quite a shock to MG enthusiasts who had become used to the pre-war look of the company's sports cars. Even the revamped TF left nothing to doubt about its 1930's-style design. The MGA was therefore a complete departure in styling for MG its beautiful streamlined body was right up to the minute and the chassis was powered by a new engine, the modern 'B'-series engine that had made its debut in the recently announced Magnette saloon. Before the official launch of the MGA, three aluminium bodied prototypes of the new sports car, coded EX182, were entered into Le Mans and acquitted themselves well, finishing fifth and sixth in their class. This was the start of a long and successful competition history for the MGA, which accounts for the models continued success and popularity in historic racing today.

The car on sale today has been the subject of an exacting professional, body off, chassis up, restoration to period 'E' for FIA historic racing and carries with it the correct FIA Historical Technical Passport (HTP), thus allowing it to compete in International historic events plus a host of British National historic and classic race meetings. A full-race 1622cc engine is supplemented by a Jack Knight straight-cut close-ratio gearbox driving through an uprated back axle. This comprehensive race restoration was completed in 2008, but the car has completed only two events since, due to the vendor's busy work commitments: Silverstone MGCC (class win) and Oulton Park Gold Cup. With 115 bhp on tap at the rear wheels and handling, in the terms of the vendor, 'simply beautifully set up' this superbly presented racer is truly ready for the 2011 season. Currently MOT tested and carrying Historic road tax there is also an option of many historic road events such as the Tour Britannia to consider for the lucky new owner.

A full specification sheet is available in the accompanying history file on the car.
