Lot 111: Rolls-Royce 20/25

Fine Motor cars incl. The Jaguar Legend, Coys (14 July 2012)

By the late 1920s the trend for ever-heavier coachwork on the Rolls-Royce 20 HP had inevitably had a detrimental effect on performance. Rolls-Royce's solution was to increase the comparatively small six cylinder engine's capacity from just over three litres to 3,699cc which, together with a stronger crankshaft allowing increased rpm, raised its output to 25hp.As with the 20 HP, the 20/25 was warmly received and proved immensely popular, soon more than doubling sales of the big Phantom II.

Various detail improvements were made to the 20/25 during its seven year production life including rises in compression ratio in 1930 and 1932; the latter year also saw the introduction of synchromesh for the third and fourth gear ratios, thermostatically controlled radiator grille shutters, a one-shot centralised lubrication system and an electric fuel gauge.

This is not your usual 20/25 and may not have a long list of remarkable former owners but this car started life as a fine example of the marque. It was a Park Ward bodied, long wheel base enclosed limousine. The car was sold to Rippon Bros on 21st February 1933 and we are informed served its owners well until 1953. The then owner removed the rear part of the car and transformed it into a pick up truck for the delivery of laundry and pressed clothes ( still with its occasional seats).

It was used as such until the then owner felt the rear part of the van would be far more suited as a separate chicken shed! The car has been sitting idle in a barn waiting to be brought back to its former glory or to its delivery days.

The car was purchased by the present owner in running order on 7Aug 1975 and was driven from Ayrshire with the remains of the van body that had been used as a chicken shed strapped to the back!

A wonderful opportunity for anyone wanting a project to restore this great marque to its former glory.
