Lot 116: Ferrari 512 BBi

Fine Motor cars incl. The Jaguar Legend, Coys (14 July 2012)

Ferrari is sensitive to criticism and especially to intimations that it might be losing its pre-eminent position in the sports car market: the Maserati and Lamborghini factories in and around Modena had already put into production sophisticated mid-engined cars while Ferrari was still selling the front-engined Daytona as its premier sports car. Unquestionably the Maserati Bora and the Lamborghini Miura were stealing sales from Ferrari and so, to regain superiority in this 'cutting edge' sector, increasingly important commercially, Ferrari developed a new car from scratch. The engine was a 4.4 litre flat 12 cylinder unit derived from Ferrari's current Formula One engine; coachwork was a sleek and aggressive Berlinetta coupe design by Pininfarina. Driving the new car, the Boxer, was a big advance for Ferrari's regular clientele; compared to the Daytona it was light, responsive and a little more forgiving in its handling, but, like its predecessor, had an abundance of power and demanded the utmost in concentration from its driver if the furthest frontiers of its performance were to be explored. The customary Ferrari programme of continuous development and improvement culminated in a new, more powerful version of the Boxer in 1976. Called the 512BB, this revised model used an enlarged version of the original engine, bored out to 4.9 litres, thus enabling Ferrari slightly to increase horsepower, while at the same time achieving a more substantial increase in torque. Finished in Rosso Corsa with beige interior, chassis 041825 has recently benefited from re-commissioning; work included partly re-trimming the interior, a re-paint and the replacement of all the belts. Interested parties should note HTT 769Y comes complete with UK V5 registration document, a variety of bills and receipts, along with a correct-type (although not original to the car) book pack, service book and tool kit. All in all 041825 provides a rare opportunity to acquire an example of a fast-appreciating, classic Ferrari, and is as such highly recommended for any serious collector. A rare opportunity to acquire and enjoy a road-ready 512.
