Lot 119: MG TC

Fine Motor cars incl. The Jaguar Legend, Coys (14 July 2012)

The T series of MG Midgets started with the 1292cc TA in 1936 and ran on until the last of the TFs in 1956. They set the fashion for sports cars in the 1930s and 1940s and were phenomenally successful in many forms of motor sport throughout the world. Probably no other cars have been held in such affection; there are MG car clubs in almost every country, with thousands of members holding rallies and meetings throughout the year. The TC appeared in October 1945, almost identical to the short-lived pre-war TB. Export was the order of the day, and many American servicemen based in Europe soon succumbed to the charms of the little cars and took them home with them; Australia and South Africa were also fruitful markets. Nor is there any doubt that the TC really set the benchmark for post-war sports car racing, and blazed the trail for the other English cars such as the Austin Healey, Jaguar and Triumph. Recently returned from sunny California, this TC was restored in the late 1980s at vast expense by Michael C. Butler, cinematographer on Jaws 2; the owner informs us that there is to be found in the history file a picture of the car wearing the California plate: JAWS74. Due to his advancing age the car has seen little use during the last 15 or so years. Since returning to the UK, the car has been fully re-commissioned, with service completed last November; recent works include replacement brake and master cylinders, new hoses, a new hood and side screens, and an electrics overhaul. The owner informs us the car is right on the button, with superb oil pressure (a solid 60psi) and a very lusty engine which pulls very strongly. The whole car has a tight feel that befits an example with very few miles since a major restoration; it starts instantly and drives very well. The bodywork is finished in British Racing Green, reported to be in fine condition, and the car has a black hide interior. The car comes with an assortment of recent bills for servicing and replacement of minor parts, as well as sundry California documents and an original owner's manual. Smartly presented, these perennially popular sports cars provide reliable and practical motoring for any aspiring MG owner looking to get involved in the numerous events and rallies available to these versatile and well-beloved sports cars.
