Lot 148: Jaguar XK150 SE Fixedhead Coupe

Fine Motor cars incl. The Jaguar Legend, Coys (14 July 2012)

During the bleak years after 1945 were, great sports cars were, not surprisingly, somewhat thin on the ground; a shining exception was the mighty Jaguar XK series, yet another product of the flawless eye of Sir William Lyons. Unarguably one of the most elegant sports cars of all time, the XK120 used the superb twin-cam six cylinder engine to provide 120mph performance and acceleration to suit even the most demanding of tastes. The series evolved further with the XK140 and ended finally with the most refined of all the models, the XK150, of which fewer than 10,000 were manufactured between 1957 and 1961, and which was the was the first to carry Dunlop disc brakes as standard following their lengthy development on Jaguar sports-racing cars.

Chassis S824647 was manufactured in 1958, and first registered on 5th February 1959. This car features the Special Equipment package including spot lights, wire wheels, and an up-rated mechanical package including a manual gearbox with the desirable overdrive. The owner informs us that the car was subject to a full body and mechanical refurbishment during 1999/2000, and reports that it is still in exceptional condition.

The previous owner had the vehicle for 13 years during which it was regularly maintained and serviced by a Jaguar specialist. The comprehensive history file confirms the fettling the car has undergone, and contains old MoT certificates, tax discs, photos and invoices together with the original buff and green log books which confirm that the car retains its original registration mark of 'XDU 150', as well as body and interior trim colours of black and red respectively.

The owner also informs us that the car was upgraded to 'S' specification during the 1960s, when a straight port head was fitted together with three SU carburettors. With the subtle engine modifications the owner reports that the 'XDU 150' is extremely exciting to drive.

One of the greatest post-war British sports cars of all, 'XDU 150' represents a highly original example of this rare SE specification Jaguar.
