Lot 152: Jaguar E-Type Series 3 V12

Fine Motor cars incl. The Jaguar Legend, Coys (14 July 2012)

he Jaguar E-Type, or as it was known in its biggest export market the USA, the XK-E, is undeniably the most desirable sports car of its era, and consequently had a long production run from 1961 to 1974. Its combination of good looks, high performance, and competitive pricing established the model as an icon of 1960s motoring. Well over 70,000 E-Types were sold in all. The Series 3 was a much-revised model that was introduced in June 1971 and ran through until August 1973 for the Coupe and to June 1974 for the Roadster. It was introduced to showcase the new Jaguar 5.3-litre V12 engine (the wonderful old XK Six was coming up to its quarter century), and also to accommodate the changing safety, pollution and fuel consumption requirements. It is easily identifiable by the wider track, wider wheels and tyres, slightly flared wheel arches, and large cross-slatted front grille. The distinctive rear badge proclaims it as an E-Type V12. All models featured power steering as standard and used more powerful brakes and ventilated front brake discs. This is the only open E-Type model to be offered with an automatic gearbox option, which was previously only available on the 6-cylinder 2 + 2 models with the XK Six. Today's remarkable example is original except for the colour which was changed from white to the much more desirable silver during the first few years of the car's life. The present vendor bought the car in 1981 and has used it sparingly and maintained it thoroughly over this period, as the twenty years of expired MOT certificates in the history file attest. The odometer currently reads 79,000miles, which the vendor believes to be correct, and has a current MOT till October this year. This is one of the last of the iconic E Types, and, having been lovingly looked after for the last 30 years, it represents a great entry to the classic car market.
