Lot 178: Lotus Elan Sprint Drophead Coupe
Lotus Elan is the name of two convertible cars and one fixed head coup produced by Lotus Cars. The original Type 26, 26R Racing version (of the S1 Elan), 36R Racing version (of the S2 Elan), 36 Fixed Head Coupe, 45 drophead Coupe and the Type 50 +2 Coupe, circa 1962 to 1975, are commonly known as the '60s Elans.
The Elan was Britain's pre-eminent 1960s sports car. The genius that was Colin Chapman, aided by a small but talented team of designers notably Ron Hickman had conceived the Elan in 1962 as a replacement for the Elite. The imaginatively designed backbone chassis, brilliant suspension and sparkling twin cam engine, allied to a pretty body, combined to make a winning car, successful not only amongst the discerning motoring public but also on the track. The Sprint has become one of the more sought after Elan types and now they are relatively few in number.
This particular example is offered in very good condition according to the present owner, who had the car re-sprayed in 2011 in yellow/gold/cream which is its original colour combination and comes with a contrasting black interior. These desirable British sports cars are as much fun on the road today as they were back in 1970, with great road holding and classic styling.
