Lot 204: Ford Lotus Cortina MKII

Fine Motor cars incl. The Jaguar Legend, Coys (14 July 2012)

The MkI Lotus Ford Cortina had done all and more than could be expected in competition, production issues at Lotus made Ford rethink its approach to building the MkII version. Lotus was busy moving its operation from Cheshunt to Hethel so it was a bad time for them to build another model. Ford were also concerned with the unreliability of the Lotus built cars. Therefore the decision was made at Ford that to continue with its competition drive and make the car more cost effective they would make the car at Dagenham themselves, alongside the other Cortina's. The MkII took a while to appear, first appearing in 1967. The MkII was a wider car than the MkI and radial tyres were now standard. Another attraction was the larger fuel tank. The spare wheel could now be mounted in its wheel well, but the battery remained in the boot to aid weight distribution. Thus the MkII did exactly what Ford wanted, it was far more reliable whilst still quick enough to be used in competition. A popular car from the outset and considered superior to the pioneering MkI version, the MkII stayed in production until 1970. Although in dry storage for the greater part of its life the history file contains numerous MoT certificates dating back to September 1989 at which time the mileage reading was recorded at only 24,239. The car now has a new MoT. The torque Lotus/Ford Twin Cam engine runs quietly, pulls well and has proven to be very reliable on recent short and long journeys. Bodywork is corrosion free with straight, well-aligned panels which are complimented by accurate door gaps all round. This car benefited from full, bare-metal re-spray in 2008 to a high standard. Unusually the paint finish on underside of car is in exceptional condition and the chassis shows no sign of repair in its 44 years since manufacture. The engine bay and boot areas are clean, well presented and corrosion free. The engine qas rebulit in 2011/12, and will need running in. The well presented interior is in first-class original condition with clean and undamaged seats and headlining, there is no damage to door cards, dash or parcel shelves. Meticulously maintained, stored in dry garage for last 20 years, this Lotus drives beautifully and has to be one of the best, ready to use, Lotus Cortina's on the market today.
