Lot 147: RAM Cobra Cobra Lightweight Competition Roadster

Goodwood Revival Sale, Bonhams (15 September 2012)

One of the fastest Cobras in the world, with race records to prove it, the left-hand drive car offered here is one of only four special lightweight chassis designed by Adrian Reynard and manufactured circa 1990 by RAM. Now trading as Realm Engineering, RAM is at the pinnacle of Cobra replica builders, and the only one personally approved by the late Carroll Shelby. After construction this car was modified further to improve stiffness, the end result making it one of the fastest Cobras on the planet. The same car was also featured in an edition of Channel 5's '5th Gear'. Races contested include the Troph´┐Że des Ardennes at Spa (winner); 1992 Archie Scott-Brown Trophy (winner); and various sports car races at British circuits in 1992 including Mallory Park, Snetterton, Oulton Park, and Donington Park, with wins at all of them and lap records at most. Indeeed, we are advised that the Cobra was unbeatable in 1992, even when pitted against Ford GT40s. The car raced on throughout the 1990s in France, contesting the Bardahl Trophy and other series at circuits such as Dijon, Rouen etc. We are advised that all racing history is with the team that raced the car. However, it should be noted that it is not known how close the Cobra's current specification is to that when raced. Taking its identity from a 1960 Ford 71E Country, and therefor exempt from road tax, '872 MRM' was extensively refurbished in 2005, including raising the ground clearance for road use, and has covered only circa 800 kilometres since. Its specification includes a 327ci (5.4-litre) Chevrolet 'small block' V8 engine, Holley fuel injection, Edelbrock performance system, Jaguar suspension components, RAM body, period interior and 1960s bucket seats. We are advised that this specification is close to that required for the Intermarque Series, incorporating period brakes, etc. The car is currently fitted with automatic transmission (intended for a lady driver) but also comes with a manual gearbox. Dry stored for the last 4-5 years, '872 MRM' has been serviced recently and returned to the road, and is described by the vendor as in generally good condition and an excellent runner. The car is offered with MoT/tax to August 2013 and Swansea V5 document.
