Lot 173: Fiat-Abarth 850TC Replica

Goodwood Revival Sale, Bonhams (15 September 2012)

This FIAT 600 was raced and hill-climbed in the 1970s by Phil Stokely, amassing good BARC and club racing provenance. The car was not used between 1988 and the late 1990s, when it was treated to extensive re-commissioning work. The latter included refurbishment of the bodywork with new floor pans, door bottoms, welding and a re-spray, as well as the complete overhaul of the braking system (new master cylinder, copper brake pipes, etc). All the correct, rare (and extremely valuable) Abarth badges are present, while the interior features an Abarth Nardi steering wheel, half roll-cage and original seats and rubber mats. The engine is a genuine Abarth 850TC, transferred to this car together with all its associated mechanicals after its owner crashed his ultra-rare FIAT 850TC. Equipped with twin-choke Weber carburettor, Abarth exhaust and shortened water pump with electric fan, this miniature masterpiece develops around 60bhp, which is transmitted to the road wheels via a four-speed close-ratio gearbox. Approximately 7,000 miles have been covered since the engine was carefully rebuilt in the late 1990s. Since 2001 the car has received a chequered decal to the roof (a period feature), bonnet securing straps and vinyl number-plate. It was subject to further refurbishment by marque specialists Middle Barton Garage in late 2004 when the running gear was overhauled. Work carried out included replacement of suspension bushes, kingpins, front wheel bearings, front/rear bump stops, steering idler and front brake pipe. AVO shock absorbers were fitted, the gearbox mount replaced, suspension mounts welded, the gear linkage reinforced, an updated fuel filter fitted and the body under-sealed. More recently, the cylinder head has been surface ground and a new gasket set and a front radiator have been added. New tyres and a battery have been fitted in the last couple of years also. In the present ownership for last seven years, the car has seen light use only, covering some 1,100 miles. Finished in red with original white/blue vinyl interior, this nicely patinated ex-racer is offered with bills relating to its recent overhaul, current road fund licence, MoT to 25th November 2012 and Swansea V5 registration document. An enormously fun motor car and a very reluctant sale.
