Lot 245: Jensen Interceptor Convertible

Auction of cars, Historics at Brooklands (24 November 2012)

The Jensen Interceptor is a sporting GT-class car that was hand-built at the Kelvin Way Factory, near Birmingham between 1966 and 1976. The Interceptor name had been used previously by Jensen for the Interceptor made between 1950 and 1957 at the Carters Green factory. Jensen had extensively used glass-reinforced plastic for the fabrication of body panels in the preceding two decades but the new Interceptor saw a return to a steel body-shell instead of glass-reinforced plastic and by having the body designed by an outside firm, Carrozzeria Touring of Italy, rather than the in-house staff. The early bodies were Italian-built by Vignale before production by Jensen themselves began; with subtle body modifications in West Bromwich. The Interceptor took its styling cues from the Brasinca Uirapuru, with a distinctive large, curving wrap-around rear window that doubled as a tailgate. The original specification included electric windows, reclining front seats, a wood rimmed steering wheel, radio with twin speakers, reversing lights and an electric clock. Power steering was included as standard from September 1968. This beautiful Interceptor Convertible is well known within the Jensen club, coming 3rd in their concours event in 1992. Lord Strathcarron, a prominent Jensen owner used the car in 'The Star is the Car', television program, little wonder when admiring the curvaceous lines of this 1974 iconic convertible. Finished in red with black leather trim, the spacious interior combines comfort with great ergonomics. The engine runs very smoothly and the vendor describes the car as being "delightful" to drive. Supplied with a V5 registration document, a valid MoT test certificate and benefitting from a recent service, this Jensen is ready to be enjoyed immediately.
