Lot 246: Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III
Launched in 1962, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III and its Bentley S3 equivalent employed the 6.2-litre aluminium-alloy V8 engine first introduced in the Silver Cloud II, although with larger carburettors, new distributor and raised compression ratio and also came with a four-speed GM derived automatic gearbox as standard equipment. Most obvious among many changes from the preceding models were the adoption of four headlamp lighting, the absence of sidelights from the wing tops, and a slightly lower radiator shell. Inside there was improved accommodation with separate front seats and increased room for rear passengers. Notable as the last mainstream Rolls-Royce to employ a separate chassis, the Silver Cloud III remained in production until superseded by the unitary-construction Silver Shadow in late 1965. The Cloud represented a supremely elegant design and is often regarded as the last true Rolls-Royce. With just 564 produced in righthand drive configuration, this highly collectable example bears all the hallmarks of a car looked after throughout its life. Originally delivered in 1966 to a Mr. P. Allen by Jack Barclays of Mayfair, it was subsequently maintained by them until 1985. At this point, it was sold to Mr. Albert Newson with all servicing and communication between the agents and owner fully documented, including the original buff log book and Mr. Allen's little red driving licence. Mr. Newson used the car sparingly but regularly during his 27 years of ownership and indeed only accrued an additional 7,000 miles during that time although it was fully maintained. With the odometer now reading 112,000 supported by 25 MoT test certificates and the owner too elderly to make full use of the car, this cherished, three owner example is now offered for sale. A full brake overhaul and new starter motor was fitted last year as well as a light restoration bringing this Silver Cloud up to correct driving order. The engine is reported to show a healthy oil pressure with the gearbox, steering and electrics all operating properly.
