Lot 415: Peugeot P135

Grand Palais Sale, Bonhams (7 February 2013)

One of the pioneering firms of the French motorcycle industry, Peugeot followed the familiar progression, first adding proprietary clip-on engines to its bicycles before building complete machines of its own manufacture. In the years immediately before and after WWI the works Peugeots were a dominant force in racing, thanks to a succession of innovative overhead-camshaft designs by Jean Antoinescu. A wide range of models was manufactured between the wars but after WW2 the firm concentrated mainly on the manufacture of two-stroke lightweights, mopeds and scooters. In 1933 Peugeot introduced the first of a series of four-stroke models featuring unitary construction of the engine/gearbox, among them the overhead-valve 500cc P515. A 350cc version - the P135 - was added to the range in 1936, remaining in production until 1940. An older restoration, this P135 is offered with French Carte Grise normale.
