Lot 435: Matchless G3LS

Grand Palais Sale, Bonhams (7 February 2013)

AJS and Matchless heavyweight singles in June 1945. Coded Model 16 and G3L respectively, the two 350cc models shared the same 93mm stroke as their 500cc brethren, combined with a 69mm bore. Housed in a rigid frame with Teledraulic front fork, the ruggedly built overhead-valve engine drove through a four-speed gearbox. Hairpin valve springs were adopted for 1949 and at the same time a swinging-arm frame was introduced, the latter initially for export only but available in the UK from 1950, machines so-equipped being suffixed 'S'. The Matchless G3L was supplied to British Armed Forces in large numbers during WW2 and this machine is fitted with an engine from one of these military motorcycles. The machine is offered with French Carte Grise normale and various documents relating to its purchase in 2000.
