Lot 453: Motobécane MB1

Grand Palais Sale, Bonhams (7 February 2013)

Founded in 1923 by Charles Benoît and Abel Hardin, the French Motobécane company had become the world's largest manufacturer of mopeds and bicycles by the 1970s. Motobécane's first motorcycle, the MB1, was developed during 1923 and entered production towards the end of 1924. A 175cc single-cylinder two-stroke equipped with belt drive transmission, the MB1 sold for 1,375 Francs and was such a success that the fledgling company had to extend its factory to meet demand. A right-first-time design, the MB1 changed little in its five-or-so years of production, what developments there were being concerned with rationalisation and reduction of costs. This particular MB1 is equipped with 'Le Crocodile' brakes and a Luxor combined headlamp/generator with matching rear light. The machine is offered with purchase receipt (dated 2003), correspondence, magazine article and copies of the old French Carte Grise.
