Lot 467: Garelli Grand Prix Racing Motorcycle
The machine offered here represents Garelli's 125cc twin-cylinder Grand Prix racer as campaigned during 1987 under the 'Team Italia' banner by Fausto Gresini and Luca Cadalora. Team Italia had been formed during 1984 as a means of nurturing up-and-coming riders who could be drafted into the works team as and when required. The first tests were conducted in June at Monza, where Luca Cadalora, Stefano Caracchi, Ezio Gianola and Fausto Ricci lapped under the watchful eye of Eugenio Lazzarini, soon to retire from racing and acting in a managerial role. Given that Garelli's 125 had been the class of the field for the preceding three seasons it is perhaps not so surprising that success came early to Team Italia, Gresini taking the 1985 World Championship with three wins and 109 points. Despite the fact that Gresini's team-mate Gianola also managed a win, the manufacturers' title went to MBA. Gianola also took the Italian Championship. For the 1986 season Team Italia recruited Luca Cadalora to partner Gresini in the 125cc class while Maurizio Vitali was given one of the new 250s. True to form, the 125cc contest turned out to be a two-horse race between the Garelli boys, who between them won eight of the 11 rounds, Cadalora coming out on top with 122 points to Gresini's 114. Needless to say, Garelli took the manufacturers' championship by a wide margin. With Cadalora on his way to Marlboro Yamaha, Bruno Casanova was hired as replacement for 1987 but was completely overshadowed by his more experienced team-mate, Gresini winning 11 of the 12 races and only failing in the final round when he fell while in the lead! Nevertheless, Casanova's five 2nd place finishes were enough to ensure him of runner-up spot in the Championship. Thus Garelli's 125cc twin bowed out of racing with an unprecedented six consecutive riders' World Championships to its credit. From the start of the 1988 season the 125cc class would be for single-cylinder machines only.
