Lot 468: Garelli Grand Prix Racing Motorcycle
Three-time World Champion Eugenio Lazzarini was a contracted rider from the beginning of 1981 but development of Garelli's new 50cc racer was fraught with difficulties. Mid-year, Lazzarini appears to have lost patience and insisted on a redesign, specifying a crankcase machined from aluminium billet and a monocoque frame, also in aluminium, of his own design. The new machine immediately showed promise, producing a reliable 16bhp, but it would take the addition of a new member to the Garelli team to realise its full potential. At the end of 1981 Garelli recruited Jan Thiel, a Dutch engineer and two-stroke engine expert, who had already enjoyed Grand Prix success with Jamathi, Bultaco, Piovaticci and Minarelli. Showing both speed and reliability, Garelli's revitalised '50' took Lazzarini to three wins in its debut season, the same number as eventual World Champion, Kreidler-mounted Stefan Dörflinger. Lazzarini ended up 2nd in the 1982 title chase with 69 points to Dörflinger's 81. The machine offered here dates from 1983 and has the mechanical anti-dive mechanism that was new for that year. Once again Lazzarini scored three wins in Spain, Yugoslavia and Italy (Grand Prix des Nations) and for the second successive year finished runner-up with 69 points. In an unlikely coincidence, Dörflinger won three times and became World Champion with 81 points, the same total as in 1982. Ex-World Champion Ricardo Tormo made a handful of appearances on the Garelli '50' in 1983 and won the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, a result that guaranteed the Manufacturers' World Championship for Garelli.
