Lot 485: Garelli Tipo 331 Roadster
After 1926 Garelli began to diversify into other areas of manufacturing and motorcycle production gradually declined. From 1928 the factory began turning out, among other products, compressed air starters for aero and marine engines, compressors for military aircraft and generators for tanks. It would turn out to be a shrewd move. The last Garelli motorcycle made pre-war left the factory in 1935. This example of a late pre-war Garelli features the newly fashionable saddle tank. Unusually, although Garelli had by now adopted a hand gear change, the original foot change mechanism was retained. Sadly, this machine has lost its original dual exhaust system with twin 'fishtail' silencers. The motorcycle is offered with its original Italian registration papers recording correct engine dimensions but incorrect capacity (500cc).
