Lot 106: Citroen SM


In 1968 Citroen bought Maserati in order to have access to a a high performance engine for its Project S, in many ways the last and more extreme interpretation of the DS concept. The result was presented at the 1970 Geneva Salon and took the car world by storm. The beautiful sculptured shape penned by Robert Opron boasted an incredible aerodynamic efficiency, the signature hydropneumatic suspensions, a powerful and smooth Maserati Quad OHC V6, the revolutionary variable assist power steering, and many other very advanced features, including a very space-age interior. The result was the ultimate 'gentleman's GT' and a car that would remain the fastest front wheel drive of the world for the following ten years. For such a complex piece of engineering the SM remained remarkably usable and in many ways a good SM today is just as satisfying and enjoyable as it was when brand new. This is the case for the SM we are proud to offer today. This original example is finished in Champagne Gold and is fitted with the extremely rare optional rally alloy wheels, described as being in excellent condition. In the interest of reliability sodium-filled valves, timing chain, oil pump quill shaft, oil cooler pipes, alternator and air conditioning have all been updated in the name of reliability. Cherished and loved as part of a small collection of the first owner for thirty years, it's now offered in very good condition and ready to drive. Complementing the Champagne Gold exterior is a tan interior and is supplied with a V5 document, full history file, bills and books this is a splendid example of the ravishing and now fast-appreciating SM.
