Lot 124: Clement Bayard Spider Tipo AL
Clément- Bayard was founded in 1903 by French entrepreneur Adolph Clément Bayard. The company became renowned for its manufacture of quality motor cars, aeroplanes and airships. Before founding his company, Clement teamed up with M Panhard calling their joint products Clément Panhards, and in due course Clément Talbot in Ladbroke Grove in London . At first the London built cars were almost identical to the French built Cléments but gradually Clément-Talbot started to develop their own cars and eventually dropped the Clément name becoming simply Talbots. Eventually, Clement focused on the French side of the business and started another company in France manufacturing cars, these being called Bayards, Bayard-Clément and Clément-Bayard the last being the most common of these names in England. The later examples of the Clement Bayard could be distinguished from the earlier ones because they had a Renault style sloping bonnet and radiators. The initial model range comprised three models (9 Hp, 12 Hp,16 Hp) which was enhanced in 1904 by a 6 Hp single cylinder, a 7 Hp twin-cylinder and 14 Hp, 20 Hp and 27 Hp 4-cylinders so creating quite a range of models early on in the manufacturing. The Levallois-Perret plant outside of Paris increased production from 1800 cars per year in 1904 to 3000 in 1907 employing 4000 workers. The car we have here today is a 6 Hp Spider Tipo AL, which has a 2-cylinder 846c.c. Engine. It has been in an Italian collection for many years, until it was bought by another Italian Gentleman a couple of years ago for taking part in Italian rallies. The leather, button back seats, retain great patina as does the hood with its leather straps. This highly desirable Edwardian car is in excellent condition according to the owner and is totally original.
