Lot 1325: Lagonda 16/80 Special Six 2 plus 2

Vintage Sale, Cheffins (19 October 2013)

The six cylinder 16/80 was new for the 1933 season and was based on the chassis of the previous model the 2litre 4 cylinder Continental. The 16/80 was equipped with a Crossley supplied 2litre overhead valve straight six which was reworked by Lagonda to their own specification. The 16/80 was named after its 16hp rating and 80mph top speed and could be ordered with 4 speed manual or pre-selector gearbox. This delightful example was bodied by John Charles & Co. Ltd of Kew Gardens trading under the name of Kanalah Coachworks and is a two seat roadster with two seat 'dickie' to the rear. The vendor informs us that the car was purchased by his father in 1983 in an unglamorous but very complete condition having been standing on blocks for the previous 20 years. The restoration was carried out over the next year, the frost damaged block was repaired and consequently the engine was totally rebuilt alongside a thorough inspection of the transmission and pre-selector gearbox. A bare metal re-spray in British Racing Green followed alongside the fitting of a new fuel tank, new wire wheels and new upholstery. With fine red interior, a good array of instruments including the Bonniksen Time & Speed Meter, the resulting motor car is undoubtedly an eye catching vehicle of nicely mellowed appearance. MG 2922 was passed on to the vendor in 1993 who states that it has never been shown but just used for high days and holidays with occasional use as a wedding car for friends of the family, he also says that it has been enjoyed by himself and his father for the past 30 years, has been serviced regularly, been well maintained and has been a pleasure to drive. Fitted with a handsome badge bar, spot lights and stone guards to the headlights this epitome of pre-war chic is now offered for sale complete with current (duty free) road tax and V5C documentation.
