Lot 017: Westfield SE Pre-Litigation

Classic Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (27 November 2013)

Founded in 1983, Westfield Sportscars continue to manufacture both factory built and kit versions of a car inspired by Colin Chapman's immortal Lotus 7. Lotus sold the design rights of the original Lotus 7 to Caterham who, in the late '80s, took Westfield to court over copyright issues. Thankfully this was settled out of court, Westfield changing a number of elements to the design, the earlier cars being known as pre-litigation models. Westfield are believed to have sold over 10,000 cars world wide since 1983 and currently produce over 400 cars a year for driving enthusiasts the world over. This genuine and original 'pre-lit' example is based on a 1988 chassis and was first registered in 1990. Built by a father and son team it was sold to the vendor (its second owner) in 2009 through Paul Matty Sportscars. The engine has a 711M block put together by John Wilcox Competition Engines. Lightened and balanced, the bottom end has been expertly prepared, whilst new valves and bronze guides were fitted aloft. A Piper fast road cam further helps breathing, the twin DCOE 40 Webers on short trumpets having recently been set up and balanced. The engine has been built for torque rather than ultimate power; although a rolling road print-out from 2005 shows that it was producing a very healthy 145bhp at the flywheel. The engine is mated to a 'Type 9' gearbox with a quick shift, whilst the suspension is set up with Spax adjustables. It has a tonneau cover with a centre zip, sidescreens and a good hood. The file includes many invoices for the work done, including the engine work as well as an original assembly book. The car comes with a spare set of keys. 15 old MOTs confirm that it has covered 9,300 miles since completion, the car having wanted for nothing during the vendor's ownership. It is reluctantly being offered for sale due to the arrival of an MGA Coupe and looks like a hassle free way of acquiring a super example for a fraction of the cost of building one yourself. Go and enjoy!
