Lot 053: MG RV8 Roadster
Introduced to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the MGB some 10 years after production of the original had ceased, the RV8 was destined to become a classic from its launch at the 1992 British International Motor Show. The new MG codenamed Adder was developed by the Rover Special Products team at Gaydon and was based on the MGB Heritage bodyshell but with a dose of steroids to pump up the silhouette and a luxurious leather and burr elm interior. Under the bonnet the RV8 was powered by a 3.9-litre V8 with a modern engine management system and Lucas fuel injection delivering 190bhp through a five speed gearbox and limited slip differential. Performance was suitably authoritative with 0-60mph coming up in just 5.9 seconds on the way to a top speed of 135mph. Telescopic dampers replaced the original lever arm units but the faithful live rear axle remained. Costing 26,000 new, only 2,000 were made of which over 1,500 went to Japan. Dating from 1994, this particular Woodcote Green example was imported from Japan in 2003 and has had three UK owners to date. Appearing to be in excellent condition throughout the car has reputedly covered just 5,000 miles from new. While this is impossible to verify, it has certainly covered only 1,500 miles since it was imported as proved by a run of old MOTs and by the speedo - a new mph mileometer was fitted upon arrival in the UK (now showing 1,456 miles) and the original kph speedo has been retained and reads just 5,388km (3,350 miles) to give a combined total of around 4,800 miles. The interior is certainly in remarkably good condition for an RV8 as the rouched leather seats on these cars tend to get dirty very quickly, something which has not happened with this one. On a short test drive the car also drove extremely well and the gearshift was notably tight and slack-free, as you would expect on a low mileage example. Waxoiled underneath, recently fitted with new tyres all round and complete with an original owner's handbook, this unusually smart RV8 is MOTd until September 2014, taxed until next March and is ready for immediate use.
