Lot 143: Ford Escort Mk1 1100

Classic Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (27 November 2013)

CATALOGUE AMENDMENT: No documentation is available at the time of sale. If the unverified Portuguese documents arrive post-sale, we will forward them to the buyer. Launched in 1968 to replace the Anglia, the Escort soon became Britain's best selling car, with over 2 million sold by 1974. With a distinctive 'dogbone' front grille and swept 'Coke bottle' flanks, the Escort perfectly captured the clean 60s look and was widely admired. Mechanically it was conventional but effective, with rear-wheel drive, precise rack-and-pinion steering, MacPherson strut front suspension and a simple live rear axle mounted on leaf springs. It was initially available only as a two-door saloon with either a 1.1 or 1.3-litre Kent Crossflow engine. Blessed with excellent handling characteristics, the MkI Escort went on to become one of the most successful rally cars of all time, remaining popular to this day within the now burgeoning classic rally scene. This left hand drive example was imported from salt-free Portugal to convert for use in historic rallies. The vendor, having decided to try his hand at a different form of the sport is now offering this original and basically sound car for someone else to take on, either down the route of a full-house rally Escort or as a straightforward restoration to standard specification. He believes that it is a one-owner car wearing its original paintwork. Prospective bidders are advised that while the car comes with its original Portuguese registration document, there is no other associated paperwork and it is sold as seen.
