The died-in-the-wool Porsche fanatic turned his (or her) nose up at the 914 with its Volkswagen 411 engine behind the seats. At Porsche they just laughed at the moaners because Porsche had never sold so many cars in such a short time. A total of 119,000 rolled off the lines of which 3,332 were powered by a "genuine" 2 litre six-cylinder Porsche engine. This version was very popular for motor sport.
