In 1961, General Motors gave both the Buick Special and Oldsmobile F-85 the same body. When this was also added to a Pontiac it was named the Tempest. It was surprising that the heavy Pontiac Tempest was available with a with a four-cylinder engine. This had a capacity of 3,185 cc and power of 112,120, 140 or 170 bhp, depending on the compression ratio and carburettors. The gearbox and differential were moulded as one piece to aid weight distribution. If a V-8 Tempest was preferred, this had a 3,531 cc unit with power of 165 or 188 bhp.
